Emma (8), as I've told you before, is a voracious reader. So my mom got her two poetry books for Christmas. They were specifically catered to young people. One was by Robert Frost and the other by Emily Dickinson. Emma spent the better part of the day reading one book and then the other.
"How did you like those books?" I asked when she finished reading.
"I hate poetry," Emma said decidedly. "It's like a riddle with no clues."

Coincidentally, that helps me feel better. My ten year old wanted poetry for Christmas so I got her a book of Jack Prelutsky. My husband suggested that I should have gotten her Robert Frost and I felt a little stupid. Now I feel better, and she loves Jack.

I have those two books as well, (I am a die-hard children's lit fanatic). I can understand her confusion. I would totally recommend Jack Prelutsky or Shel Silverstein to begin with. Two poetry favs of mine.
