Why is it that Amish Friendship Bread starts are always given in Ziploc bags? Do the Amish really use Ziplocs? And why does the bread call for instant vanilla pudding? I have trouble seeing the Amish using instant anything, let alone pudding.
I think Amish Friendship Bread may have as much to do with the Amish as French fries have to do with the French.

This is a picture of the Amish, not the French.

Ok, funniest observations I never observed myself.
You've made me hungry for Amish friendship bread, which I haven't had for...holy cow...more than 10 years. I wonder where I could find a recipe to "start a start".
Found it!

I think you have too much time on your hands if you have time to sit and think about Amish Bread.
Good questions!!! You are probably right. Now you've got me wanting Amish bread but I need some bread start. Do you have some right now?
Debbie, You make me laugh! I either have too much time or seriously weird thought processes--take you pick.
Laurie, I just made 2 loaves Wednesday and I have 4 starts in my freezer 'cause I don't know what to do with them.
Pretty good point! Although my recipes have never called for pudding...yours sounds yummier!
Oh man, I need to come to visit today. BTW, I don't think I am coming to Blogapaloosa. I am babysitting full time now and with 4 in school and Ken's work, I don't know how to get away in the middle of the week. Thanks for the invite though. I really only wanted to come to see you and Angie. I do want to come see you this summer and I want to bring Ken. We'll have to work out the details.
I have 4 starts in my freezer too! I should get one out. I'm always such a chicken to give them to people when I do it!
Funny! But oh, how I love my MIL's Friendship bread - it never turns out as perfectly for me!
I love when people point out things like this....it gets my brain crankin' again!!
Thanks for coming to my party!!
In all seriousness, depending on the settlement, instant pudding and ziploc bags are totally acceptabe. Most Amish communities allow various degrees of English (the term Amish use for non-Amish people) products. There are indeed some settements that restrict such things, but really, most communities allow ziploc bags and all that. Very few ordnungen (the set of rules for any given community) forbid grocery stores :)
Thanks Anonymous! I feel a little smarter 'cause you stopped by.
Now my bread feels more authentic, too!
