The Anti-Cupid

I hate Valentine's Day. I HATE it. I can not express to you how much I hate Valentine's Day. (Perhaps I should have begun, "How I hate Valentine's let me count the ways..." but cheesy poems are part of the reason I hate Valentine's Day.)

It's true that me, a normal, pleasant, rational person, is the Scrooge of Valentine's. I hate how hard it is to get a restaurant. I hate how hard it is to arrange babysitting. I hate over-priced roses and heart shaped boxes of assorted chocolates and Hallmark cards. I hate that we have to buy each other gifts. Isn't Christmas, my birthday, his birthday, mother's day, father's day and our anniversary enough? Now some random day we have imposed romanticness and we must buy gifts.

The biggest problem of all is that I never know what to get Wendell. I hate shopping for him regularly (remember my problem at Christmas) now I have to get him something that represents love.

So what are you getting your hubby for Valentine's? (Warning: I might steal your idea and get Wendell that too.)

Hum....I never knew anyone who hated Valentine's Day but when you put it that way, I kind of hate it too. I usually don't get Ken anything because I have the same problem you do. I like to make a Valentine breakfast for my kids and give them a little stuffed animal with a little love note to them but Ken, we'll I still have cards from several years ago that I haven't given him yet so maybe he'll get a nice (old) card! I hope someone else has better ideas cuz I may steal them also!

Here's an original idea (not). Dinner-and-a-movie basket. His favorite movie in a basket along with two wine glasses and a bottle of sparkling cider... and restaurant food- carry out style. We are boring but heck, we have four kids. I'll get them in bed early and we'll stay up "late"... tell us what you end up doing!!

Yeah, I don't love v-day. I used to but over time it has diminished in excitement for me. I'm getting Dave a really nice neck pillow. He has neck issues so I think he'll love it. Good luck... husbands are impossible to buy for!

I agree with hayngrl101-- can't you just say "how about instead of me buying you something, I give you a 'late' night?" What man wouldn't go for that. Then tell him all you want is flowers and the cheap kind from the grocery store are fine. That is sort of how it works out over here... too much information.

Except this V-day my husband is going to be out of town and will get home late. So this v-day I am left to handle the kids all alone all day then when he gets home and I am tired, more is expected. Nice v-day!

Get him nothing. He'll be glad you saved the money. Then get yourself something. He'll be glad he doesn't have to.

We're not real romantic around here either.

I don't love Valentines Day. I hate that there has to be a "special" day to show that you love someone. It's a day to set yourself up for failure. Always. My husband shows me in countless ways all year long that he loves me, but because he doesn't get me flowers or chocolate or something "romantic" for Valentines Day, I'm supposed to be disappointed. I hate that. It's on a Thursday this year anyway, which means he works late and I have to take E to karate, so dinner is out. He's working that Saturday too, so the other doc he works with can go away for the weekend. We usually do cards for each other and that's it, and it's fine with me. He always gets me a beautiful card.

Don't even get me started about Mother's Day.

we don't get eachother anything either, but maybe write a nice card- expressing our love! ha ha! you could just make out with him and call it good!

Oh my sweet sister... I'm so glad that the infamous V-day isn't just miserable for the single, lonely, and depressed... I think Valentines Day is for people who still call each other pookie bear and make out in movie theaters. The rest of us just don't need ANOTHER reason to buy a greeting card and some waxy creme-filled chocolates.

I can't believe all this Valentine's hostility! You ladies! Loving is what we do best, and we get an official day to celebrate love! It doesn't have to be the gifts. I hardly ever have gotten a Valentine's Day gift. And I usually just make kinky candy bar cards (pretty cheap, too! And you can help eat it!)...and you can shower your kids with extra doses of love...and if all else fails, have some great SEX! I know you read my post and know that Valentine's Day is my second favorite holiday...I guess I better post again about this and change your mind! :)

My suggestion would be to get the whole family involved it is Valentines Day for your kids too. Create a 'date night' with the kids. Make a nice dinner and have the kids get dressed up use a table cloth, napkins and candles. After dinner play some fun games or watch a movie together. Have ice cream sundaes (or your favorite dessert). Maybe even put on some romantic music and have a ‘dance’ I bet your kids would let you and Wendell dance one song uninterrupted. Valentines Day should be more about spending time together not necessarily spending money on each other. And after the kids go to bed you and Wendell can have some quality time alone. (well as alone as you can be with a new baby):)
